What Is Clinical Waste?

Clinical waste is defined in the Controlled Waste Regulations 1992. It is commonly defined as a type of waste that has the potential to cause infection or disease. Such waste is generated from healthcare service providers such as GP surgeries, hospitals, independent doctors and clinics or centres, and dental practices. Clinical waste includes any waste that consists wholly or partly of:

  • Drugs or other pharmaceutical products

  • Swabs or dressings

  • Syringes, needles or other sharp instruments which, unless rendered safe, may prove hazardous to any person coming into contact with it

  • Human or animal tissue

  • Blood or bodily fluids
