Handwashing & Drying Guidance

One of the most important days within 2020 has to be Global Handwashing Day (October 15 th).

Global Handwashing Day

The COVID-19 pandemic provides a stark reminder that one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of a virus is also one of the simplest: hand hygiene, especially through handwashing with soap. To beat the virus today and ensure better health outcomes beyond the pandemic, handwashing with soap must be a priority now and in the future. This year’s theme, Hand Hygiene for All, calls for all of society to achieve universal hand hygiene.

On average, you come into contact with 300 surfaces every 30 minutes, exposing you to 840,000+ bacteria and viruses, with only about 5% of us washing our hands correctly. Good hand hygiene starts in the home. From a young age, we are taught to wash our hands before we eat, after using the bathroom, messing with animals and any other messy tasks. As we get older some of us become lazy and complacent.

There are many ways to implement good hand hygiene within your business and other environments. To help you understand the options for hand hygiene, below are our top tips for washing and drying your hands.

 The Importance of Handwashing

Washing hand with soap and water has been proven to be the best method at preventing the spread of bacteria and viruses (World Health Organization). The recent coronavirus pandemic has seen an increase in people washing their hands for 20 seconds on a regular basis.

We as the human race frequently touch our eye, nose and mouth without even realising it. Germs can enter our bodies immune system through the eyes, nose and mouth which in turn can make use sick. Hand hygiene also protects those around us, as germs from unwashed hands can transfer to objects. Objects such as handrails, tabletops, doors and much more, the list literally is endless. Once the bacteria, or virus, from unwashed hands, has landed on an object, the next user will then pick up whatever germs you have and potentially become infected. If you hand children you will understand how children can pick up the common cold so easily from school.

We are very much still in the midst of a pandemic. To help reduce the spread of the virus, businesses should ensure they are providing and range of handwashing facility for both employees and customers.

 Hand Sanitiser and Soap Dispensers.

Sanitiser and soap dispensers can be free-standing or fixed to the wall. All dispensers provided by Hygienic Concepts incorporate antimicrobial technology – proven to reduce bacterial growth by 99.99%. The dispenser can use both liquid and foam hand sanitiser or soap. Hygienic Concepts provides a Never-Run-Out complete virucidal and bactericidal solution. The first defence against infectious pathogens.

Out and About

If you are out and about a handy 100ml bottle of Clinell hand sanitiser is ideal. The 100ml pocket-size bottles are a convenient way to ensure that your employees and customers are protected on the go.

Should you dry your hands?

The answer is yes! Germs love warm wet hands and areas of the body as these are the areas they can reproduce and multiply faster. A study found damp hands are 1,000x more likely to spread bacteria than dry hands. With only about 20% of people dry their hands after washing them.

Recently, the only thing that has seemed to be important is washing your hand regularly and for 20 seconds whilst singing happy birthday twice. However, hand drying is just as important as the initial handwashing.
